This piece is an improvisational study in which I challenged myself to explore new movement through subtlety while finding a common narrative throughout the movement. What was unlocked were memories of childhood and riding the bus, where I first learned that being different and authentic were not safe ways to be. As other children were searching for their own identities, they found solidarity in outcasting others. Being the “faerie” that I am, my magic became an easy target for this unwilling to accept their own magic.

This study allowed me the opportunity to reclaim my authenticity and grant acceptance to my younger self to fully express his power, joy, and light. For me, this piece was a practice in creating space in the world where fear can no longer silence my magic.

The idea of “faeries”— ancient magical creatures that were somehow part of both the human and mystical realms, and often approached with caution by humans, for fear and misunderstanding of their magic— resonates with me deeply. Through these improvisational studies, I sought to claim space for people like myself and bring together my love of the natural beauty of the earth with my own innate magic. “Faerie” is also a reclaiming of the beauty hidden in the many labels that have been used by the patriarchy to disempower those identifying in the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Disenchantment” is part 1 of a series of 3 improvisational studies that represents my loss of sense of self and authenticity being thrown into a world of false mirroring from those around me.
