My approach to close quarters is a little different than most. I do not know where I will strike when I do these drills. I move where I see openings. I call this CWCT. Closest weapon/Closest Target.
This strategy and approach dates back to the late 1980s when I was developing the SPEAR System. What I discovered was that staying very close and 'in-contact' with the opponent was actually safer and provided more options to control and counter.
Caveat: The scenario always dictates. There are situations where STUN & RUN would be the optimal option so don't 'think' that this applies to every confrontation.
And remember, in the SPEAR System, physical responses are the last counter-measure when avoidance and verbal de-escalation weren't options or effective.
Coach B
Lots of people try to emulate this now, but if you watch their demos carefully, (watch the role-player then watch them) you can see it's choreographed. You can tell by how precise the defender moves. This is subtle but important. Some of you will not be able to read this and some of you will. Again, I don't know where or when I'm going to hit, I'm reading my opponent's movement visually and through the sense of touch, which is why I always have a hand indexing him.
To start drilling, slow things down and explore the CWCT concept and work on target acquisition. Then balance and flow. Add suddenness and explosiveness once you understand the formula. Getting High Gear will allow you to add much more authenticity to the drill. (Vist blauerspear.com/whyhighgear to see examples off where you can take this).
