Dysphagia is commonly known as difficulty in swallowing. This difficulty can be in the passage i.e. deglutition of food from mouth till the stomach or it can be the feeling of obstruction of food in the passageway. The physiology of swallowing is made understandable by explaining the voluntary phase, pharyngeal phase, and oesophageal phase where the movement of food bolus is discussed step by step.

Pathophysiology of dysphagia categorizes it into oropharyngeal dysphagia and esophageal dysphagia. However, it is further classified on the basis of conditions in which it is arising i.e. structural or propulsive dysphagia. The conditions which can cause dysphagia either structural or propulsive include Zenker’s diverticulum, sarcoidosis, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease with weak peristalsis, Crohn’s Disease, and many others.

The association of dysphagia and dementia, dysphagia and GERD, dysphagia and dysphasia are important to consider and understand because the progression of these conditions causes dysphagia to become more common.

Medical students should watch this Internal Medicine lecture to know about the detail of the pathophysiology of dysphagia and the role of all these diseases in dysphagia.

Upon its physical examination, a patient is checked for signs of bulbar or pseudobulbar palsy, thyromegaly, skin disease. The diagnostic procedures for proper investigation differ on the basis of the cause of dysphagia. The diagnostic techniques which are used mostly in the clinical settings for diagnosis, such as Clinical Radiology techniques, fluoroscopic swallow study, and esophageal manometry, are discussed in detail.

Treatment of dysphagia also differs because of the cause and location. It includes the use of the nasogastric tube, elimination of dietary allergens, esophageal dilatation, and surgery.
