Daniel’s story: Integration is hard work

Daniel is a refugee from Eritrea who arrived in Sweden in 2015. Here, he speaks about the cultural shock and challenges most asylum seekers experience when they arrive in the country of asylum and realize that everything is different than at home and not at all what they had expected. The Swedish language is difficult to learn, but without knowledge of Swedish you will not find a job. It takes time to get used to Swedish culture and customs.

Most new arrivals think they can get a job and a start a new life immediately so they can pay off debts and send money to their families. But you must go through a two-year integration course to become an active member of society. Daniel says hard work is the only way forward. You must work hard to master the language and the Swedish system!

Telling the Real Story is an information campaign to raise awareness about the dangers involved in using the smuggling route, including through Libya. The campaign is targeting people in different countries who are planning to undertake this dangerous journey. The Telling the Real Story campaign also aims at providing information on complementary pathways as alternative and regular opportunities to irregular movement (i.e. scholarships, family reunification, labour mobility).
