For this project our group, Tatyana, Julen, Dakota, and Kiana, agreed to taking a close look at the film "Born Into Brothels" directed by Zana Briski. As a group we decided to tie past readings and new information to specific aspects of the film and sex trafficking as a whole. Our goal was to create a critical evaluation of how "Born Into Brothels" portrays our chosen aspects of sex trafficking. Tatyana kicks off the presentation with her slides on sex trafficking victims. She goes into the perspective of victims and how they fall into this industry. Using outside information Tatyana paints a picture of what trafficking looks like for some and how big its prevalence is internationally. Kiana then talks about the "White Savior Industrial Complex" and what the effects of it may be. Her section describes some attributes that make up the complex and the negative effects they may have. Kiana also takes time to talk about how the "White Savior Industrial Complex" fits into the narrative of the film. Julen's section talks about how men in "Born Into Brothels" are lacking in the film. He takes a look at how male figures are shown (or not) and how that ties into the "Dangers of a Single Story" video. Then Dakota's topic of the economics of sex trafficking is next. He dives into what fuels sex trafficking and how global economics are affected. This sections pays close attention to how money moves and what roles people play in continuing this industry. Finally we ended our project with some key takeaways that we felt were helpful. As a group we agreed that our takeaways did not need to be action but rather a new frame of reference. The most important thing to walk away with is a new way of thinking critically about this subject, not another "activist" to do list.
