Assignment: Film #5-Character Study

In this exercise, students will create a short film that focuses on building a character through behavior.

Select a painting or photograph that captures your imagination in terms of its potential to become a scene. The painting or photo must be of a single person. With your actor create the exact physical pose they have in the picture, the exact makeup and wardrobe. Aim to create the their attitude, their inner emotional life, their outer physical life, the full, real sense of the individual in the picture. This is your starting point. Expand by adding movement and behavior, no dialogue, all of which emanates from the painting or photograph. Have your character make a difficult decision. Show that the character is faced with a predicament that affects their psychological and/or physical well-being. Visualize their process of consideration and show that they have made a decision.

Objective: Images as guides. Exact physical duplication and real investigation of the emotional life of the characters. To explore the visual expression of internal states, in particular the articulation of a character’s thought process with an emphasis on POV shots and reaction shots.

Statement of intent: The character’s predicament and decision.

Notes: The project might be easiest to visualize if your character must decide between possible actions rather than merely changing an internal option.

Specifications for short film:
The film features one character only and is based on a painting or still photograph.
 The character is engaged in an activity, giving the viewer insight into the character. The character believes they are alone. The character must make a decision on screen. 
Block the actor for camera expression. NO PANTOMIME.
 Sound may be used but NO sync-sound (dialogue).
 NO MUSIC. 
One to three minutes in length.
