The difference that one person can make is enormous. So, what happens when this person passes on? What happens to the people they leave behind? Especially in such a closely-knit community such as a family, the death of a loved one can turn the family's dynamic completely upside down.
Opening Speech, written by Amy Moyer:
In loving memory of our dear sweet mom. I am so thankful to have had Cheryl Ann Moyer in my life. It was about 19 years ago, and Sean and I were heading into the “meet the parents” stage, you know... for most couples like six months, for Sean and I, it was like, you know... two weeks. Our friends who had set us up asked me if I had met Sean’s mom yet. I said NO! I’m scared to meet her. They asked why and told me I had nothing to worry about because she’s so nice. I said, “well, there is no way in the world that this woman is as wonderful as her son says she is.” But guess what? She WAS! When we met I felt instantly connected to her. I could sit and talk to her for hours. She was warm, kind, welcoming and she was soon my Mom too. Now it turns out I had actually already met Cheryl years before and I’ll tell you about that in a bit. So, if you’re here today and you didn’t know Cheryl personally, I don’t want you to leave here without knowing just how wonderful she was. If you are one of her loved ones, I want you to remember her and keep her memory alive. She was a Mom to three children: Sean, Jennifer and Kimberly. I don’t have to tell them how much she loved them... she told them all the time. She was very proud of her kids. The rest of us get to benefit from Cheryl loving her kids and raising them to be amazing, caring people. Dave, Tom and I were add-ons but were never treated as such. We were welcomed and loved. She was a nurse. It was natural for her like motherhood This is another way her kindness shown through. Now about me meeting her before. I lost my grandma in 1990. I went into the ICU at Memorial Hospital and went back right after she had passed. I came out of the room alone, sobbing. A nurse stopped and hugged and held on to me and told me she was sorry. I didn’t know the nurse, but I never forgot that moment. Ten years after that I married that kind nurse’s son. She was a wife. She loved Larry. She was a great example of how to be a wonderful wife. 52 years together doesn’t happen without devotion and true love from both people. She created a home full of love for all of us, and for that, we will be forever grateful. She loved Elvis, hummingbirds, flowers, lighthouses and covered bridges. Cheryl loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. She was creative and crafty. She loved to sew and quilt. Whose kids had the coolest costumes? The Moyer kids and then the Moyer grandkids! She had to run a stuffed animal emergency room and operated to save Spotty, Wubby, and Maxell many times for her grandkids. Whatever was wanted or needed, she could do it. For many years, their family vacationed in Myrtle Beach, SC. They built wonderful memories during those times. Over the last few years, she was able to visit SC again, Alaska and Walt Disney Worl and build new memories with her grandchildren. She was a sister and she was a great one. She loved her siblings! I enjoyed listening to her stories about the Springman brats. They sure did have some adventures! She added some siblings when she married Larry and she loved them too. Cheryl was a friend. She was compassionate, kind, helpful and full of wisdom, all the things that make a great friend. She was an aunt. How lucky you were to have Aunt Cheryl? She supported you, she attended your events and celebrations, sent you cards and made you know you were special and loved. She is a mommy to Duchess. Duchess is her youngest child and the only one that’s covered in hair and barks. Duchy is grieving for her and will miss her forever. And last but certainly not least,, Cheryl was a Meemaw. She has the five most beautiful grandchildren, it goes without saying... she loved these kids! If she talked to you about any of them, you knew the love was strong and deep. Matthew, Katelyn, Thomas, Zachary, and Lauryn. We your parents will never let you forget how much she loved you, how proud she was of you and how much love and happiness she wanted for you. You were her joy! So, for Meemaw... go and get it. Live life, remember her and accomplish all the great things that she knew you would. She will be the angel watching it all from above. Finally, I loved getting cards from her. She always added a message and signed them Mom and Dad. We got our last card for our anniversary last week. The exact words she wrote in that last card for our anniversary last week. The exact words she wrote in that last card are the words we want to say to her today... “Never forget you mean the world to us. We love you.”
