'before character' is an installation that combines two lamps, an intaglio-print and a multi-channel sound installation.
The sound piece is composed of auditory illusions, referred to as the 'phantom words illusions' discovered and named by Diana Deutsch*.
In listening to these sounds you are invited to experience "hallucinatory" illusions that are based on your current state of mind, your own subconscious thoughts and feelings as well as your linguistic knowledge, influenced even your own movement in space.
Often people initially hear a jumble of meaningless sounds, but after a while distinct words and phrases suddenly unfold and emerge, and over time, also change. The movements of your body and head may also influence these changes in perception since the sound waves are mixed in the air.
It often seems that the left and right loudspeakers are producing different words, which sometimes appear to be spoken by different voices. People often report hearing words and phrases spoken in strange or (to them) ‘foreign’ accents – presumably they are interpreting the sounds from the loudspeakers as words and phrases that are meaningful to them, even if this causes the speech to appear distorted.
In this way the phantom words are able to mirror the mind and the fluidity of the individual personality and perception while at the same time reflect the multi-lingual aspects of both the festival and a globalized society as such.
Themes of interpretation and misinterpretation of language and the inner versus the outer world is confronted and conflated.
The phantom words are produced with technical and scientific support from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt Germany where the artist is doing an ongoing research project on psychoacoustic phenomena.
The project is kindly supported by The Danish Arts Foundation and Max Planck Institute.
