Animation transcript

The NHS in Kent and Medway is consulting on a proposal to replace and relocate our last remaining mental health dormitory ward - Ruby Ward currently based at Medway Maritime Hospital.

We want to know what you think about our plans.

Dormitory wards are the type with several beds in one room.

This type of ward is ok for people who only need a short stay in hospital for a physical health problem, but do not provide the best environment for people with serious mental illness
Dormitory style wards can impact on the privacy and dignity of mental health patients.

In addition, Ruby Ward isn’t big enough to allow us to provide the range of therapeutic care that the patients need.

This means people on Ruby Ward can take longer to recover.

The Government have promised to eradicate mental health dormitory wards by 2024. They have made some money available to the NHS to help achieve this.

The NHS in Kent and Medway has been awarded £12.65 million to replace Ruby Ward.

We have looked at potential options and think that the best solution is to build a new unit in Maidstone – close to Maidstone Hospital.

The new unit would provide 16 single ensuite rooms and lots of space inside and out for patients and visitors.

We would be able to offer the therapeutic environment that people need to help them get better as quickly as possible.

We want to hear your views on our proposal.

There are lots of ways to get involved and you have until midnight on 21 September to respond.

Please visit our website or scan the QR code to find out more.

We look forward to hearing from you.
