In this presentation, Dr. Huibrie Pieters and Miriam Sleven of UCLA will discuss current research and practical strategies for care focusing on people 65 years and above who are in active treatment for cancer or are post-treatment. Cancer biology in older people and common age-related complications associated with malignancies will be discussed. The main focus will be on management strategies during and after treatment, geriatric assessments, and communication strategies with healthcare providers. At the end, available resources will be provided and a current research opportunity for older women diagnosed with breast cancer will be reviewed.
About the presenters: Dr. Huibrie C. Pieters, PhD, DPhil, RN is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Nursing.
Miriam Sleven, RN, MS, OCN is an Oncology Nurse and Research Study Coordinator at the University of California Los Angeles School of Nursing.
