This 360° video depicts intense moments of conflict between the police and protesters, during the 2019 Hong Kong anti-extradition protests. It does not accurately show the balance between the largely peaceful protests, instead focusing on the visually and emotionally intense moments.
In 2019, the Hong Kong government put forward a controversial extradition bill which would allow individuals to be extradited to mainland China. This was hotly contested, triggering the now (as of 22 August) 11 weeks of protests. The Hong Kong government have yet to completely withdraw the bill, instead referring to it as ‘dead’. Most believe this wording to be unofficial and non-binding, keeping a window open for the government to attempt to reintroduce the bill at a later date.
Despite a march of 2 million residents on June 16 and a second march of 1.7 million, two months later, on 18 August, the government have yet to address any of the now 5 demands outlined by the protesters. This list grew to encapsulate the original purpose of the 2014 Umbrella Movement protests. This includes universal suffrage and requires China to abide by the Sino-British handover agreement, ensuring the autonomous operation of Hong Kong in a 1 country, 2 system arrangement.
Although the PLA (Chinese army) currently sits in waiting just over the Hong Kong - China border, a lack of action from the Hong Kong government to address the 5 demands, is ensuring tensions will continue to rise and more conflict seems inevitable.
