Bell target shooting is a traditional target shooting discipline that was introduced to the pubs and clubs of The Midlands in England in the 1890s. It was designed to make shooting easily accessible to the working man and to improve the marksmanship of the Britsh Army. In the early 1900s there were more people bell target shooting than going fishing or playing football. Over 1200 clubs existed within Birmingham alone and over 4000 nationwide. It is shot with low powered (6ft-lbs) air rifles, stood with no support using open sights at a hardened steel target plate with a bell behind the hole. If you get your pellet through the hole, the bell rings! Scoring circles are engraved on the faceplate at 1 inch intervals from the centre. The hole is 3/8th inch diameter and it is the same as shooting at a 6 inch target at 100 yards, so while it is close range it isn't easy, but is very addictive and great fun. Usually shot with 6 shots and the cumulative total used as the score. A maximum is 30.6, but 6x scoring bells totalling 30 or more is known as 'a possible'. I have only ever witnessed one maximum score, my personal best is 30.5, I need to practice more!
