At a Veterinary hospital in League City Texas, science is being used to transform the lives of pets. It’s not science fiction; it’s science for dogs.
“We can do everything that they can do for humans, for dogs, here at this lab.” Dr Steven Garner and his team at Safari Vet in League City, TX have spent the last 5 years perfecting animal stem cell therapy. The facility’s specialty: using stem cells to treat paralysis in Dachshunds.
“A stem cell is a cell that still has the ability to adapt and change. When we harvest them from the fat, that stimulates them – wakes them up – and tells them, ‘Hey! It’s time to go do something!’”
That “something”- doing the work of rebuilding spines, cartilage, and even healing arthritis and dry eye.
”We’ve done a large number, between 50 and 100 Dachshunds that have been paralyzed, that we’ve place the stem cells in their spinal cord and that has allowed them to repair their spinal cord much faster.”
The recovery is absolutely miraculous.
“We’ve had dogs who came in who were 2 ½ years paralyzed who are now walking.”
Hilda Rodrigues and her husband brought their dog Chocolate to Safari vet desperate for answers on why Chocolate unexpectedly lost the use of his hind legs. “He was able to use them on Friday night, but Saturday he wasn’t at all. So his bow legs were inward and he was dragging them.”
“See how his toes are upside down? A normal dog would feel that and turn them over.”
After a quick exam with Dr Garner, Chocolate received a promising prognosis. “Our plan is to do what’s called a myelogram to see where the compression is.”
Dr Garner says whether it’s paralysis or even arthritis, the sooner a dog seeks treatment, the higher the likelihood is that they will regain full use of the area with the help of stem cells. “The thing that determines whether he’ll walk again is how many cells live through this event, and stem cells preserve those cells. So the quicker we get those stem cells in, the better.”
